 Case Study : Preffers Pharmacy

Wyoming, MI - November 26, 2001
In a competitive market, providing outstanding customer service and reducing fraud is paramount to success. Pfeffers Pharmacy & Gifts, located in suburban Grand Rapids, Michigan, knows these challenges well. "Last summer we saw our check cashing business grow to our largest numbers yet," said April Stevens, store manager for Pfeffers. But management of the process became overwhelming and fraud was rising. "After a thorough search, we implemented BioPay and have been happy with the results from the first day."

Pfeffers has many customers and cashes thousands of payroll, personal and company checks every month. Using BioPay, Pfeffers can easily identify repeat customers and confirm their check cashing history simply by having them provide their fingerprint image. "Some of our customers have been coming in for 25 years and some we’ve never seen before," said Stevens. Unfortunately, some of these customers were cashing counterfeit checks or those written on closed accounts. Using standard methods of checking IDs against what was written on the check wasn't always secure or effective in avoiding losses. "Many times people would present false IDs or write incorrect information on the check, and we wouldn't find out the check was bad until long after the customer was gone. There was no way to accurately tell a good check from a bad check until we implemented BioPay."

BioPay is easy to use and features simplified management tools. When a new customer comes in, they are easily enrolled in BioPay by providing their ID and fingerprint image. Return customers simply use their fingerprint image to initiate a transaction. BioPay's management tools enable easy tracking of how many transactions have been completed during specific time or date ranges, check cashing dollar totals, fee schedules, receipt printing and images of the actual check that was cashed. Stevens reports, "The store manager and bookkeeper now spend less time compiling and managing data and more time helping customers."

Like many small retailers, Pfeffers relies on part-time and after-school help. In many cases employee turnover is high. BioPay not only stores fingerprints but also pictures and notes about customers. When a return customer initiates a transaction, the clerk is presented with the customer's name, photo and check transaction history. A manager can also store notes about a customer. For instance, "Long-time customer: always cash this person's check." "It's great. Now new clerks can immediately identify a customer and give them a warm welcome. This makes the customer feel good and their business appreciated," said Stevens. "It also frees up our managers' time because they no longer have to oversee the check verification process... everything is done using BioPay."

Meeting customers' needs creates loyal customers. "If we can simultaneously eliminate fraud and improve the customer experience, our success is guaranteed. A happy customer is a return customer," concluded Steven. "Our losses are down and our business is up…and we owe it all to BioPay. We couldn't be happier."
