General Biometric FAQs

What are biometrics?
Biometrics are unique physical or behavioral characteristics of an individual which can be measured and thus compared. Various types of biometrics include fingerprints, iris recognition, voiceprints (speaker verification), facial recognition, and hand geometry.

What types of biometrics exist?
Fingerprints are the most commonly used biometrics, with more than 50% of systems using this type. Other biometrics include hand geometry, iris or retina scanning, facial recognition and signature verification.

How are biometrics better than password PINs or tokens?
Because biometrics are bound to an individual, they can't be shared, lost, stolen or forgotten, meaning they give the highest level of security available and can be used in place of sharing personal data such as checking or credit card account numbers with store clerks.

Are biometrics safe to use?
Yes. To our knowledge, no one has ever been injured or adversely physically affected by any biometric system.

How big is the biometrics market?
According to the International Biometrics Group, biometric revenues are expected to grow from $339m in 2000 to $1.9b by 2005.

What is the difference between identification and verification?
Identification is the process of determining a person's identity by performing matches against multiple biometrics. Verification is the process of establishing the validity of a claimed identity by comparing a verification template to an enrollment template.

BioPay Payroll Check Cashing FAQs

What is the BioPay electronic fingerprint identification system?
BioPay uses biometrics to accurately identify a customer and verify their check transaction history.

How does the BioPay electronic fingerprint identification system work?
The BioPay electronic fingerprint identification system uses a person's unique fingerprint to positively identify a person, confirm their check cashing history, and quickly complete check payment transactions. The widely used system enables merchants to substantially reduce fraud by detecting repeat offenders and stopping individuals from cashing bad checks.

How does a person enroll in the system?
The process is easy. On initial check-presentment the customer gives the merchant his/her driver's license or other ID for scanning or inputting into the BioPay database. At the same time, the customer's two index fingers are scanned and an electronic photo is taken of the customer. The entire process takes about two minutes and all information is stored within the BioPay system. A repeat customer need only use their fingerprint to complete future transactions.

Why is proper enrollment so important?
The enrollment process creates a template against which all future verifications will take place.

What if the finger from which the fingerprint sample was taken becomes injured, and cannot be verified?
Upon enrollment in the BioPay system, images of both index fingers are taken. So, if one index finger becomes unusable, the other can be used.

What type of hardware or software is needed to implement the BioPay system?
BioPay offers complete hardware and software systems that can be easily integrated into any existing Windows-based system. The hardware consists of an optical fingerprint scanning device, a combination check imager and magnetic stripe reader, and video camera. All devices are connected to a PC. The Windows-based software requires a Windows 98 or higher operating system, 266 MHz processor, 64MB memory, 5GB disk space, and Internet access.

What is the BioPay Check Guarantee program?
The program guarantees the face value of all payroll and government-issued checks entered into the BioPay system that are pre-printed, less than $800 and no more than one-month old. Each check cashing customer must also be enrolled in the BioPay system.

Corporate BioPay FAQs

Why was BioPay created?
BioPay was created in response to the need for positive identification of customers to enable convenient and secure financial transactions. BioPay's leading-edge technology integrates biometrics with established database and transaction processing methods.

How does the BioPay electronic fingerprint identification system differ from competitors?
BioPay features a number of competitive advantages, including:

  • State-of-the-art biometric technology has replaced obsolete ink pads, increasing the customer experience by eliminating messy fingers, shortening transaction time and eliminating potentially embarrassing back ground bank checks.
  • BioPay enables "one to many" fingerprint comparisons assuring that people can only enroll once. Meaning, fraud artists can't enroll multiple times with multiple identities.
  • Reduces fraud because biometrics are unique to each individual — they can't be shared, lost, stolen or forgotten.
  • Centralized, shared database prevents losses to known offenders.
  • Transactions are initiated with biometrics, saving time and increasing accuracy.
  • Electronic photos back up fingerprint scanning.
  • Easy-to-use point-and-click solution with no technical expertise required.
  • Images of all checks cashed can be stored along with other transaction data.
  • Data can be easily exported to standard spreadsheet programs.
  • Low cost, reliable solution.
  • BioPay technology can be easily integrated into various hardware solutions.

How does BioPay technology benefit merchants?
Merchants implementing the BioPay electronic fingerprint identification system will:
  • Reduce fraud by detecting repeat offenders and stopping individuals from cashing bad checks.
  • Decrease losses. A customer with an outstanding check at any BioPay location will be prevented from performing transactions.
  • Improve customer relations by always accepting valid checks. Repeat customers can easily complete transactions by simply providing their fingerprint.
  • Reduce transaction time. Clerks no longer have to check a customer's identification, call check makers or banks, or write ID information on the check.

How does the consumer benefit from a merchant or bank implementing the BioPay system?
Consumers using BioPay to cash their checks will:

  • Complete transactions faster and easier. Repeat customers can simply use their fingerprint to complete a transaction. No other identification is needed after enrollment.
  • Enjoy added security. Only enrolled customers can cash their checks, making lost or stolen checks useless at merchants using BioPay.
  • Enjoy the flexibility of having their checks cashed 24x7, given a positive history within the system.

Do my competitors have access to my customer list?
BioPay does not share customer information between clients. After a transaction has been initiated, BioPay reports an "accept" or "decline" and indicates the name of the reporting merchant or bank who received a bad check from the customer. The outstanding check will remain on the system until it is resolved. Personal contact information is not displayed.

Who is taking advantage of BioPay technology?
BioPay systems for merchants, like grocery and convenience stores and check cashing merchants, and banks have been implemented across the nation, and BioPay's IndivioSM database is the nation's largest commercial electronic fingerprint database.

Do consumers like using the BioPay system?
Consumers like the convenience and security of the system. BioPay enables people to cash checks by simply using their fingerprint image. No time is wasted having clerks and tellers study IDs, make calls to banks, or have the customer give an ink fingerprint, and if the consumer has lost of forgotten their ID they can still complete a transaction. Furthermore, because biometrics are bound to an individual, they can't be shared, lost, stolen or forgotten, meaning they give the highest level of security available.
